Awesome Ways to Celebrate Mother's Day (Family Optional!)

Is this your first Mother's Day as a new mom?  If so, congratulations!

Or maybe you're looking for a new tradition to carry on year after year.  Either way we've come up with some great ideas on how you can spend your special day (with or without your family!).

  • Go out to brunch (or lunch or dinner)
  • Plan a picnic with your family
  • Plan to sleep in, and ask your family to bring you breakfast in bed. Don't set the menu; let their creativity surprise you!
  • Cozy up on the couch to catch up on your books and magazines
  • Clue your husband in ahead of time so he's prepared to wow you by discreetly (or not so much) sending him Ways to Surprise Your Wife on Mother's Day from ezine.com or Ways to Pamper Mom from Oprah.com
  • Rent several movies you've been waiting to see, and have a movie marathon
  • Clean the house (just kidding!)
  • Grab some friends and go to the movies
  • Ask all the moms in your extended family to go out for tea/coffee
  • Go shopping
  • Head down to your local bowling alley or mini-golf center
  • Spend it gardening, crafting, and/or scrapbooking (as you'll learn in Rule 24 of Elizabeth's forthcoming book, You Cannot Be Serious: and 32 Other Rules that Sustain a (Mostly) Balanced Mom, she will not be doing the latter!
  • Have a party or cook-out (but make sure someone--of the male variety--is doing the cooking!)
  • Take a day trip
  • Schedule a spa appointment

Here are some other great articles we found that explore fun (and unique) things to do to celebrate Mother's Day: 10 Fun Ways to Spend Mother's Day from Parents.com Mother's Day Central. It's an entire website devoted to Mother's Day for heaven's sake. Surely there's an idea here that will trip your trigger (we hope)!

No matter how you spend your day, take at least a few moments to recognize and celebrate yourself for the wonderful, important job you do every single day (and night).
