Having a strong support system will undeniably set the stage for your first few years raising multiples. Here are a few organizations that will prove invaluable as well types of support to consider lining up before you pop. National Organization of Mothers of Twins Clubs Founded in 1960, this registered not-for-profit organization is a network of over 450 local clubs, representing over 25,000 parents of multiples. Your local hospital Many hospitals offer support groups for new parents and even new parents of multiples. If the hospital at which you'll deliver doesn't offer such a group, ask if they know of any in the area or call other local hospitals to see if you can track down any leads on groups already formed or forming nearby.
Someone you can call if you need to run to the store When you need a quick gallon of milk or a pack of diapers or a prescription for one of the kids, it isn't always convenient to load everyone up and head out. It's a great idea to have a few names and numbers of people you've spoke with in advance about being available during the day to pop over for a few minutes and tend to the babies while you run out. Or, someone who can run a quick errand for you if, for whatever reason, you aren't yet comfortable leaving the babies in someone else's care (or haven't had time to shower in a week).
Cleaning Help I totally get that the cost of cleaning help isn't always manageable long-term. I, myself, continue to hire and fire people (nicely) because I simply can't justify the cost. However, during the first few weeks or months at home with new babies, it's amazing what a clean house (that didn't get that way from you scrubbing it) can do for your overall energy and sanity levels. In fact, if a parent is wondering what to get you as a baby gift and you are comfortable suggesting it, you might mention a cleaning service for a week or two (or whatever they are comfortable with).
The right Online Resources Which online resources will float each woman's boat differ. New moms are looking for different things. Hopefully, How to Raise Twins can fulfill all of the items on your wish list (if not, let us know what we're missing!). Beyond this site, there are many others out there with good information. Beware, however, of those with content that upsets you, frustrates you, or overwhelms you. And beware of chat rooms where the discussion is primarily negative. New moms are all tired and often frustrated. But the best approach often involves quickly moving toward a solution. Spending too much time in a chat room with many women who seem more interested in venting than cheering each other on and motivating one another can become very draining very quickly.
